MacBook Air sizes: compare the M5 footprint and working arrangement
Compare real 13-inch and 15-inch M5 Air dimensions, pixel counts and carried mass without treating the larger display as a faster computer.
Updated:

Choose the larger screen or the smaller footprint deliberately
Choose the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air when the smaller computer footprint makes a practical difference in your bag or on the desks you use. Choose the 15-inch M5 Air when the larger built-in display is useful enough to justify its additional device mass and width. These are two actual Apple UK models: their display diagonals are 13.6 and 15.3 inches, while both are specified at 224 pixels per inch. The larger model therefore supplies more native pixels rather than a higher listed pixel density.
The 13-inch display is 2560 × 1664; the 15-inch is 2880 × 1864. More pixels can support a different working arrangement, but macOS scaling, text size and application layout determine what you see. We do not turn the pixel-count difference into a promise that a particular spreadsheet or design workspace will fit comfortably. Check your actual application at the size and scaling you intend to use.
| Apple M5 Air reference | 13-inch | 15-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Actual diagonal | 13.6 inches | 15.3 inches |
| Native pixels | 2560 × 1664 | 2880 × 1864 |
| Width × depth | 30.41 × 21.5 cm | 34.04 × 23.76 cm |
| Manufacturer device mass | 1.23 kg | 1.51 kg |
| Listed pixel density | 224 ppi | 224 ppi |

Compare the shape against a real bag and desk
The 15-inch reference is 3.63 cm wider and 2.26 cm deeper. Those differences can matter more than the diagonal when a laptop must share a small surface with a notebook or a mouse. Measure the clear internal sleeve space and account for padding; the manufacturer’s computer dimensions are not the dimensions of a protective case. A nominal 15-inch sleeve label is not a guarantee that every 15-inch computer fits it.
The manufacturer masses differ by 0.28 kg, or 280 g. That is useful arithmetic for the computer alone, not a measurement of the complete kit. Add your verified charger, case and required adapters to both sides of the carried-mass tool. If one arrangement requires an additional dock, comparing bare computers hides an item you will still need to carry.

Do not invent a performance difference from display size
Both M5 Air models offer 16 GB memory with configurations up to 32 GB, and storage choices up to 4 TB on the checked specification pages. The 13-inch lineup includes an 8-core GPU reference and a configurable 10-core GPU, while the checked 15-inch reference lists a 10-core GPU. Keep the selected chip configuration with the memory and storage selection; a size label alone is not a complete configuration.
We have not measured export times, sustained rendering, temperatures or battery life. A larger screen does not prove a faster result in the application you need. If that application has explicit memory or storage requirements, apply them first. Then choose the display arrangement from direct experience or a suitable in-store demonstration, rather than buying extra size as a substitute for evidence about the work.
Ports and the UK box contents may keep the kit simpler
Both checked models list MagSafe 3, a headphone socket and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Both document up to two external displays under specific resolution and refresh-rate combinations. Therefore, do not pay for the larger model solely because you assumed that the smaller one could not support two external screens. A dock, display and cable must still support the full proposed path; two sockets on a hub do not establish independent-display compatibility.
The UK box-content lists include a two-metre USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and state that the power adapter is sold separately. Confirm the exact order and the adapter you plan to use. The historical M1 Air and keyboard photographs show the device category, not either current M5 unit or its UK keyboard. This guide establishes the physical and documented configuration trade-offs; it does not claim a current price or availability winner. Save the full UK configuration so that a later comparison is between equivalent memory, storage and included equipment.
